Start with the seated eye line
The most common media wall mistake is mounting the screen too high. Measure the height of your eye when seated on the sofa you actually own - usually 1.0 to 1.2 metres from the floor - and set the centre of the screen close to that. A screen above a mantel is often 300 millimetres too high and gives everyone a stiff neck.
Then check viewing distance. As a rough guide, sit around 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen's diagonal away. Getting this right at design stage decides how deep the joinery can be and whether a projector or a large panel is the better answer.
Proportion and how the wall reads
A media wall is a piece of architecture, not a TV bracket. Decide whether it should read as a recessed panel, a full-height cabinet run, or a low unit with open shelving above. Align the joinery with the room: pick up on the height of a picture rail, the width of a chimney breast, or the reveal of a nearby door casing.
Symmetry is calming but not compulsory. Where a chimney breast sits off-centre, it is often better to build across the full wall and let the joinery reset the room's centre line than to fight the existing geometry.
Heat is the thing people forget
Amplifiers, games consoles and set-top boxes produce real heat, and a sealed cabinet will shorten their lives. Every enclosed equipment bay needs an inlet low down and an outlet high up, with a free area sized generously; a common approach is a slotted or perforated plinth vent below and a concealed slot behind the top rail.
Where equipment is dense, a quiet thermostatic fan is worth the small cost. Also avoid mounting a screen directly above a working fireplace or a heat-generating stove without a proper heat shield and a manufacturer-approved clearance.
Cable management
Plan cable routes before anything is made. You need power and data behind the screen, a route from the screen down or across to the equipment bay, and a means of pulling new cables through in future. Use conduit of at least fifty millimetres with smooth bends, not a tight hole through a shelf.
Bring in an aerial or satellite feed, HDMI runs and network cable at first fix. Wireless is convenient but a hard-wired network point behind a streaming device removes most of the buffering complaints people blame on the television.
Sound
If you want a soundbar, decide whether it sits on a shelf, mounts below the screen, or hides behind an acoustically transparent fabric panel. Fabric panels look clean but need the right cloth; a solid timber panel in front of a speaker will dull it noticeably.
For in-wall speakers, positions must be set before plasterboard goes up. For a subwoofer, leave a ventilated bay with power at low level and remember that a sealed cabinet will change how it sounds in the room.
Storage and everyday use
Think about what actually lives in a sitting room: controllers, chargers, board games, books, a drinks tray, children's things. A media wall that is all screen and no storage looks good on day one and is cluttered by day thirty.
Mix closed and open storage. Closed doors hide the untidy; open shelves stop the wall reading as a bank of cupboards. Put a socket inside one closed cupboard for charging, and put it near the front so a cable can reach.
Lighting and finish
Low-level indirect lighting behind or beside the screen reduces contrast fatigue in a dark room and makes the joinery look considered. Use warm dimmable LED with the driver in an accessible place; drivers fail long before LEDs do, and a sealed driver behind fixed panelling is a future headache.
Matt and mid-sheen finishes work better than gloss around a screen because they scatter reflection. Dark tones make the screen bezel disappear; lighter tones keep a small room feeling open. Both work if the finish is properly sprayed and the edges are crisp.
Getting it built
A good media wall is co-ordinated joinery: the joiner, the electrician and, if involved, the AV installer need the same drawing. Agree equipment sizes, ventilation, socket positions and conduit runs before the workshop cuts anything.
Allow for the screen to be removable. Brackets should be fixed to a solid, well-supported ground behind the panel, and the panel should come off without dismantling the whole unit when a screen is replaced in five years.

- Can a media wall be fitted in a period property without damaging features?
- Yes. Freestanding-style joinery scribed to the wall avoids cutting into cornices or mouldings, and in listed buildings the work can be designed to be fully reversible.
- Should the television be recessed into the joinery?
- Recessing looks clean but locks you to today's screen dimensions. A shallow rebate with generous tolerance, or a flush panel with a removable section, keeps the appearance while allowing a future replacement.
- How deep does a media wall need to be?
- Around 350-450 millimetres for the equipment bay and useful storage, and as little as 120-150 millimetres for the screen zone itself, depending on the bracket.
