Why original doors are worth keeping
An original four or six-panel door is made from close-grained timber, mortice-and-tenon jointed, with panels that float in grooves so the door can move with the seasons. Modern hollow-core and most engineered replacements are lighter, thinner, less acoustically effective and cannot be repaired.
Keeping the original also keeps the room's proportions honest. Period doors are typically taller and narrower than modern standard sizes, and swapping to a standard leaf usually means altering the frame and losing an original architrave.
Diagnose before you plane
A door that binds is usually telling you something about the building, not the door. Check the hinges first: worn knuckles or loose screws in stripped screw holes let a heavy leaf drop and catch on the latch side. Re-drilling with hardwood dowels and re-fixing solves a large share of sticking doors in ten minutes.
If the frame itself has moved, planing the door to fit a distorted opening will leave a bad gap when the building settles back. Look at the whole gap around the leaf: an even four to five millimetres at the head and sides and around six to ten at the floor is the target.
Repairing damage and decay
Rot is most common at the bottom rail of external doors and at the foot of stiles where water has stood. The correct repair is to cut out sound-to-sound and splice in matched new timber, glued and where necessary pegged, rather than filling a soft area with resin and hoping.
Split panels can often be re-glued and cramped. Loose joints are re-wedged or, where the door has been over-planed and racked, dismantled and re-assembled. Old repairs in the wrong species or with modern filler often need removing first to reveal the actual condition.
Stripping paint safely
Doors in properties painted before 1992 may carry lead paint. Test before you start. Where lead is present, avoid dry sanding and avoid heat guns above roughly 200 degrees Celsius; use wet abrasion or a suitable chemical stripper, keep the area sealed and ventilated, and dispose of waste responsibly.
Dip-stripping is popular because it is cheap, but caustic tanks can dissolve animal glue in the joints, raise the grain and leave residues that bleed through new paint. For a door worth keeping, hand or on-site stripping is the safer route, and stripping back to fully bare timber is rarely necessary.
Ironmongery
Original rim locks, mortice furniture, hinges and finger plates are part of the door's character and can usually be cleaned, de-rusted and re-used. Where new hinges are needed, match the size and knuckle style and use the right number: a heavy period door wants three hinges, not two.
Fit new ironmongery into the original mortices where possible. Every new set of holes weakens the stile, and a door with four generations of lock cut-outs is a door that has been badly served.
Draught-proofing and acoustics
Period doors let air through, which is comfortable in a hallway and expensive at an external door. Concealed compression seals routed into the rebate of the frame, plus a brush or drop-down seal at the threshold, dramatically reduce draught without changing appearance.
For sound between rooms, the door leaf mass and the seals matter more than any other detail. A solid original leaf with perimeter seals and a threshold drop-seal significantly outperforms a modern hollow door in the same frame.
Finishing
Prepare properly: fill, spot-prime bare areas, sand between coats and cut in the moulding lines carefully. Building thin coats keeps the panel mouldings sharp; heavy coats round them off and the door starts to look like a plastic moulding.
For paint, an eggshell or satin finish is practical on doors and shows fewer defects than gloss. For stained or waxed timber, test on a hidden area first, because a stripped period door rarely takes stain evenly across old and new sections.
When replacement is the right answer
Sometimes the original has gone: a 1970s flush door in a Victorian house, or a leaf so decayed that more than half would be new timber. In that case a purpose-made door to the original pattern is the correct route - matching panel layout, stile and rail widths, moulding profile and thickness.
Take dimensions and details from a surviving door elsewhere in the house if one exists. That single reference is worth more than any pattern book, because it reflects what the original builder actually used.

- Usually yes. The decayed section is cut back to sound timber and a matched piece spliced in. Once primed and painted, the repair is not visible.
