How scribing works: fitting joinery to alcoves and walls that are out of true

The craft technique behind seamless fitted furniture in period rooms: transferring a wall's real profile onto timber so the cabinetry can stay square.

What scribing actually is

Scribing is the practice of cutting a piece of timber to match the exact contour of an existing surface instead of assuming that surface is flat. The line is transferred from the wall, floor or ceiling onto the workpiece, then cut and eased until the joint closes along its whole length.

It is the difference between furniture that appears to have grown in the room and furniture that has been parked in it. In an alcove with a bowed chimney breast, a scribed edge closes tight while the cabinet behind it stays plumb and its doors keep their even gaps.

How the profile is taken

The workpiece is positioned plumb and level - never simply pushed into the opening - and held at a small standoff from the wall. A pair of compasses, a scribing block or a purpose-made profile gauge is then run along the wall, marking a line on the timber that mirrors every deviation.

The cut follows that line on the waste side, with a hand plane, spokeshave or belt sander used to feather the final fraction. On complex ground - mouldings, tiled returns, sloping plaster - a profile gauge or a template in thin board records the shape more reliably than a compass alone.

Because the piece is set plumb before marking, the geometry of the cabinetry is fixed first and the crookedness is absorbed afterwards. Reversing that order is the root of most badly fitted work.

  • Set the workpiece level and plumb, standing clear of the wall.
  • Transfer the wall's contour with compasses, a scribe block or a gauge.
  • Cut to the waste side, then ease to the line by hand.
  • Test-fit repeatedly rather than aiming for one perfect cut.

Which components should carry the scribe

Good design decides in advance which parts are sacrificial. Typically it is the outer filler panel, the scribe rail at the top, the plinth at the floor and any pilaster or return that meets a wall. These are made slightly oversize precisely so material can be removed on site.

Structural carcasses, doors and drawer fronts are never scribed. Cutting into a door to chase a bowed wall destroys its symmetry and its shadow gaps, and it can compromise a lipping or a veneer edge. If a maker proposes trimming a door to fit a wall, that is a warning sign.

Where scribing has limits

Scribing can absorb a considerable amount of deviation, but a feathered edge has a minimum practical thickness. Push it too far and you end up with a knife edge that chips, or a scribe so deep it eats the visual width of a stile and makes a run look lopsided.

Where deviation is severe, the better answer is a change of detail rather than a heroic cut: a deeper filler, a designed shadow gap, a returned pilaster, or in some cases local plaster correction agreed with the decorator before installation. On out-of-true alcoves it is sometimes right to bring both sides to a matched, deliberate reveal so the eye reads symmetry instead of hunting for the fault.

Scribing in period London interiors

In the boroughs we work across, alcoves beside chimney breasts are rarely parallel, ceilings dip, and floors run away from the hearth. Scribing is not an occasional refinement in that context; it is the standard method by which bespoke joinery is made to look inevitable.

It also explains why a genuine survey matters more than a showroom measurement. Deviations have to be recorded before manufacture so the right allowances are built into the drawings, and so the installation has enough material to work with.

What to ask before work begins

Ask which components are designed to be scribed and how much allowance they carry. Ask how the wall profile will be recorded, and at what stage of the wider build the survey will happen. Ask what happens if a wall turns out to be further out than expected, and what the agreed detail would then be.

Clear answers to those questions are a reliable indicator of how the finished junctions will look, long before anything is made.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't joinery just be made to the measurements of the alcove?
Because an alcove is rarely the same width at the top, middle and bottom, and its walls are seldom plumb. Work made to a single set of figures will bind at the tightest point and leave gaps everywhere else.
Does scribing take a lot longer on site?
It adds installation time compared with fixing a stock unit to a wall, and that time is part of what bespoke joinery buys. It is also what removes the need for filler and repeat visits later.
Can a door or drawer front be scribed to a wall?
It should not be. Doors and fronts keep their true geometry; the filler, plinth and scribe rail are the pieces that take up the building's irregularity.
What if a wall is too far out of true to scribe?
Then the detail changes. A deeper filler, a deliberate shadow gap, a returned pilaster or agreed plaster correction will look far better than an over-deep scribe that thins to a fragile edge.
