The short answer
A media wall that is pulling away from the wall or drooping along a shelf line is carrying more load than its fixings or its spans were designed for. The two usual causes are fixings anchored into plasterboard or soft plaster rather than solid ground, and horizontal members spanning too far without support.
This is not cosmetic. A screen bracket, a run of equipment and a stone or timber hearth shelf represent real weight at a distance from the wall. Movement is the early warning; the failure mode that follows is not one you want to discover with a television on the front.
Fixings into the wrong substrate
Plasterboard on dabs looks and sounds solid until it is loaded. A cavity fixing into a twelve millimetre board can hold a picture; it cannot hold the moment force of a cantilevered panel that a screen is hanging off. Over months the board deforms around the anchor and the whole assembly rotates forward at the top.
Lath and plaster is worse, because it can feel firm on the trowel while offering almost nothing behind. Older London party walls may also be soft brick or lime-bedded, where a plug in weak mortar creeps steadily. The correct approach is to locate solid masonry or timber studwork, then fix to it with anchors specified for the load, using resin anchors where the masonry is friable.
Spans, shelves and cantilevers
The second cause is geometry. A floating shelf projecting three hundred millimetres from a wall generates far more leverage on its fixings than its own weight suggests. A long, unsupported shelf in a sheet material will also creep - it deflects under sustained load and does not return, so a shelf that looked flat on day one develops a permanent curve.
Deflection is governed by depth of section, material and span, not by how tightly a screw was driven. That is why sound media walls use concealed steel, a supporting rail or an internal frame behind the visible line rather than relying on the board alone.
- Load path: every kilo must reach solid structure by a defined route.
- Span: long shelves need a thicker section, hidden steel or intermediate support.
- Cantilever: projection multiplies the force at the fixing.
- Creep: sustained load bends sheet material permanently over time.
Heat, services and the effects nobody plans for
Recessed electronics and inset fires generate heat inside an enclosed void. Heat dries timber and sheet material unevenly, which encourages panels to bow and joints to open. Enclosures need ventilation and a sensible separation between heat sources and finished faces, following the manufacturer's clearances.
Cabling adds a practical dimension. Retrofitting a conduit route into a finished wall usually means cutting the very panel that was providing stiffness. Services should be planned into the build, with accessible routes and back boxes positioned before manufacture.
How movement is properly corrected
The correction begins by establishing what the wall is actually built of and where the fixings are landing. If they are in board or weak plaster, the assembly comes forward far enough to install a proper timber or steel subframe fixed to solid structure, and the joinery is then hung from that frame.
Deflected shelves are replaced rather than propped: a creased section will not recover. Replacement uses a deeper section, a stiffened edge or concealed steel sized for the intended span. Screen brackets are re-anchored into the subframe with load-rated fixings, not into decorative panelling.
Where panels have bowed from heat, ventilation is addressed at the same time. Fixing the symptom without the cause simply resets the clock.
What a soundly built media wall looks like
It starts as a structure, not a facade. A frame fixed to solid ground, load paths designed for the actual equipment, spans sized for the intended shelves, ventilation and cable routes designed in, and only then the finished faces, doors and lighting.

- They can, where an enclosure has no ventilation and no clearance. Heat dries material unevenly and panels move. Clearances and airflow need designing in from the start.
